Couldn't resist it
I had mostly stopped wearing watches. The phone tells the time more accurately, and one less thing to carry on seemed perfectly reasonable.
Then I saw this.

Couldn’t get away from it. The grey textured dial, the angular steel case, the black rubber strap. Nothing particularly impressive on paper, yet somehow difficult for me to ignore.
That made me notice something about objects. We often try to justify them through usefulness, as if everything we own needs to solve a problem. A mechanical watch is especially bad at that argument. There are cheaper, more accurate and more capable ways to know the time.
But perhaps usefulness is only part of why we keep certain things around.
Some objects create a small ritual. You put them on, notice their weight, occasionally look at them for no reason at all. They become part of how a day feels.
I thought I was becoming interested in watches again.
Maybe I just found one that made me want to wear a watch. I’ll find out if that’s the case when it arrives in a couple of days.
